Brownies, writer Sharon Nezny  *In Attendance*
(09 Pages)
Guelph, Ontario, Canada

Bio: Sharon has long been inspired to write about and share extraordinary stories, along with tales from her own unconventional childhood. She has recently taken her love of writing and formalized her passion by studying Creative Writing at the University of Guelph, where she resides.

Synopsis: A seven year old girl is excited for her first night of Brownies, but she carries a dark family secret that she hides at all costs.

Inspiration for Screenplay:
Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.
~William Wordsworth
Cindy comes straight from my heart and I introduced her in this screenplay as a snap shot of the larger story of her unique, complicated life. I wanted to share the story of Cindy as a resilient little girl who, like many children, are experiencing and coping with mental illness in their own family.

Just For Men, writer Mary Tolan
(15 Pages)
Flagstaff, Arizona, United States

Synopsis: A father and son drive across the 1960’s American West in an 18-wheeler, the father desperately wanting the boy to become a man, the son dreaming of having a life radically different than that of his truck-driving dad. Will a stop at the mysterious ‘Just for Men’ place advertised on billboards all along historic Route 66 change their perspectives?

Inspiration for Screenplay:
While doing interviews in Winslow, Arizona, several years ago, I ran into a woman whose father owned a clothing shop for men in the small town years before.

He advertised it on highways as “For Men,” which brought lots of truckers and other male travelers into the shop. Many were not looking for clothing. The story stuck with me, and soon I was creating characters seeing “Just for Men” signs on the road to Winslow.

Wilma Deals , writer Virginia Shaffer  *In Attendance*
(18 Pages)
Chicago, Illinois, United States

Synopsis: In this micro-budget caper/heist, an elderly African-American woman plots to take down a corrupt nursing home administrator.

Inspiration for Screenplay:  In 2016, I was disturbed to read a news story announcing US Justice Department charges involving thirty Florida nursing homes and a $1 billion Medicare fraud/money laundering scheme*.  A quick web search for similar stories turned up a distressing number of cases charging nursing homes, owners and administrators throughout North America of resident abuse, neglect, fraud and embezzlement.
Admittedly, Wilma Deals features a fictional caper/heist; unfortunately, the neglect, fraud and embezzlement that Wilma and her friends encounter in this short are sad realities for countless nursing home residents.
